Artist - Kate Stuart
Kate first studied ceramics in the early 2000’s as a medium to enhance her community arts practice.
She took a deep dive into exploring the expressive and functional potential of clay and over the next 15 years Kate made and exhibited expressive sculptural work and homewares, alongside working with communities in Melbourne’s east and the Mornington Peninsula to create collaborative public art works in clay.
After a hiatus Kate has recently returned to her own studio practice with a focus on small batch production of wheel-thrown tablewares that also provide a canvas for artistic expression.
The magnificent coastline of South Gippsland greatly influences her work and inspires Kate to create vessels that bring the beauty of nature into the everyday rituals of serving and eating food.
Kate develops glazes that reflect the tidal ebb and flow of the ocean and river, the colours and textures of the coastal vegetation and the atmosphere of the wild coastal environment of Venus Bay.
